Can anyone remember World Of Sport on ITV with the likes of Dickie Davies?
Does anyone know what time of day it used to start on a Saturday?
Many thanks
Watching ITV was frowned upon by my mother, Tony, because in her opinion only 'common' people watched ITV. (Being seen as 'common' was a totally appalling idea to my mother. So I could watch Blue Peter but not Magpie, etc). She only made two major exceptions, which were for Coronation Street (which I assumed, she saw as some sort of indictment of the way that 'common' people lived) and for professional wrestling on a Saturday afternoon.
The wrestler she 'loved to hate' (as did many others, since he was actually billed that way) was Mick McManus:
And, as a kid, so did I. Les Kellet (or whoever the good guy was on that particular Saturday) would go a fall down, usually to a bit of skulduggery from his (bad guy) opponent - on the referee's blind side, of course. Then he would equalise in the next round, after sending his opponent out of the ring where he would be hand-bagged by a few grannies, before our hero made some audacious move that won him the contest. Nowadays I poke fun at my son-in-law who stays up until daft o'clock watching the wrestling from America.
If I even thought of switching over while the wrestling was on, my mother would get me in a Full Nelson and wouldn't relinquish her hold until the football results were coming on:-)
My favourite was Jackie "Mister TV" Pallo who used to rile up the grannies like nothing on earth.
Apart from wearing his hair at a challenging length compete with huge bow at the nape, he had a habit of waggling his head and smiling as he strutted about that nearly gave my mother apoplexy.
