Outside a newsagents shop yesterday was a sign saying, ( We assure you that our newspapers are safe to handle ) I assume they mean from the virus? if so, who has assured them to be able to make such a statement.

ZM, Newspapers are delivered in bundles not packages.If the scientists are correct the it matters not a jot who handles them.

teacake, yes, the procedure is usually that the papers are printed and piled up by machine, and then bound in bundles usually wrapped tightly by wire, by different machines. When they're delivered to shops or bins, someone will cut the wire.

The top and bottom papers are usually warped or torn by the wire and may well have been touched by delivery persons. But there's a strong chance the ones in the middle will never have been touched by human hand. Unless, as you say, other customers have been touching them; but most customers do what you do, take the second one down from the pile.

13.39 Well if everyone does has I do remove the top one ,to take the second one down, then the top one is being handled by lots of people, so more chance of the virus being spread.

i don't remove the top one, just grab the next one by the edge. Then I throw the money at the person behind the counter and run.
