Just had a phone call from Barnsley telling me that there is a problem with my tax and that I had to press number 1 to continue. If I didn't then I would be heading for arrest over tax fraud....I am sure that my tax is all sorted out and did not want to find myself the victim of a scam so I didn't press said number....Sadly I imagine that others will....

That is a definite attempt at scamming. What number did they use?

Barry 1010 The number used is 01226 531983 .... is there anywhere else I should post this info?
Of course HMRC never do ring you....and on a Saturday? Really?

gingejbee I worry about those that will...a friend with dementia would answer and believe anything he was told.....there are some very vulnerable people out there...as I have no doubt you know..they are who I worry for.
I would urge everyone to use a call guarding phone. I have a BT4600 set and it is excellent at stopping scam calls. I've had them some time and there are newer models available. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them for vulnerable friends and relatives.
It's easy to get flustered when concerned and regret it afterwards. But can't see what pressing a digit could do. They could generate that tone themselves.
Often wondered when people are hoaxed into getting on to a premier line which cost the bill payer hundreds it I imagine comes up on their bill so can the phone company not see there was summit wrong there .If the scam was against the phone company say you have earned 100 of your bill they would not be long putting you straight
Does anyone know what would happen if you did press 1?
likely it would connect you to someone else at a high cost

That last number of yours called me back. My phone was switched off so a very nice sounding lady left a voicemail. It is Lifeline Services - I have never heard of them but Google tells me it is a personal alarm service for the elderly
Blimey, hadn't thought of that. My elderly neighbour had one of these a while back - luckily she resisted and hung up, and I told her never to press 1, or any other number they suggest.
clearl scambo
the tex man has somewhere on his Very Large Tax sigte a warning on the grounds given
they never ring
the never ring satday
the dont arrest
etc etc

I did one - oh that is terrible - are you going to come around now? and they rang off .....
I did press 1 when I got one of the calls, wasn’t charged anything but had a very interesting and amusing telephone conversation with a gentleman telling me unless I paid 4 grand the police would be round in 30 minutes to arrest me!!
For those that know me will know why this is very funny.
Can't be bothered to search but I'm certain one can't pass charges over like that. Urban myth.
OG, have you never phoned Directory Enguiries and let them connect you to the number?
