Try spraying with a water spray filled with some washing up liquid. Water the earth with it as well. Helped with a couple of my shrubs.

Thanks both. It's certainly not caterpillars. I'll definitely try the soap-spray. (It's in a pot so I've brought it in and when it's dark I'll check for earwigs with a torch.) It's a fave - a thriving plant, dead-headed religiously, I expected it to flower for months. 48h ago it was perfect. Tsk. Thanks again

If the plants were newly planted, that's when they can be most vulnerable to pests.
Are what is left of the plants left with holes in the leaves or are they appear to be nibbled back, which may suggest deer or rodents eating them.

Probably aphids. An ice cold spray will help. If it is whitefly neem oil is eco friendly.

With due respect,I would hazard a guess and say aphids are sap-suckers and don't actually eat the leaves etc.
I'd like to see some clarification on this.
