Sewing Machine

Err indoor's sewing machine has developed a bit if a temprement

Sometimes it's slow and other times it operates at normal speed

Any ideas what could be causing this phenomenon ?

It could be that the foot control has a problem. We had to buy a new controller for ours a few years ago - not overly expensive.

She probably needs to keep moving the foot plate up & down at a constant speed.

Has it been oiled recently ?

bhg .. did you look at your foot controller at all before you replaced it with a new one. The usual fault with them is you press the controller and nothing happens. Then press a bit more and the machine takes off at full tilt !
They are quite interesting inside .. it's not at all what you would expect. Just a load of graphite disks that often need a good clean !

alavahalf - I can't remember whether I took it apart or not; it was about 10 years ago. It's not like me to just replace something without trying to fix it so I suspect I had a go at it.

My treadle foot for my 1975 Bernina went wonky in 2004 and I had to buy a new one. One comment was that I had been using it on a tiled floor. I suppose that they all wear out or get problems eventually.
