Don't forget that TV that is funded from advertising revenue is getting its money from the public, who are paying for the privilege of being persuaded what to buy. It's almost as bad as the trick of getting the public to pay for advertising products - i.e. I pay more for a tee shirt with the 'designer label' printed across the front.

Fender, 15:50, me neither. I rang the licensing people (just before lockdown) and asked... I told them honestly what I do and don't watch, but also that my TV "can" receive live TV- they seem unable to remove it. And they told me I don't need a licence, so I have stopped paying.
If you aren't using it, you don't need to pay.

The BBC constantly has the Government breathing down it neckS and capitulate to them far too often.
We need to be free of state interference in our national television.
To do that the BBC needs to to be freed of politicians, Governments, state funding, and be allowed to be a media player in the 21st Century.

If you want to seen state funded Government propaganda television, the Russians are masters of it, and the BBC no way resembles that.

I was satirising both points of view. The BBC gets it from all sides, libertarians and conspiracy theorists.
Underneath all that guff there is indeed a need to reform the licence arrangement. But it needs to begin from a sensible starting point, bearing in mind most people do, actually, like, want and, it would seem, need a public service broadcaster.

A 2017 report by the DWP, showed 40% of eligible pensioners over age seventy-five, did not claim Pension Credit (PC).

If that 40% claimed PC, they would get that benefit, a free tv licence and any other concessions available to those on PC.

If nothing else, the new scheme should encourage more folk to claim PC.

I say this every time there's an argument about the BBC, and it's true.

All of the left wing people I know say that the BBC is blatantly anti left, and all of the right wing people I know say it's blatantly anti right. Think about it for a second. Even if you hate them, if they're pi551ng of the 'enemy', they can't be all bad can they?
