Political correctness gone wild
According to a report from the Chief Inspector of Scottish prisons, inmates should be called by their first names, they must be given fresh fruit and veg every day, they are entitled to clean, fresh air in their cells, they are entitled to adequate exercise and ....... wait for it...... prison officers have to knock on cell doors before opening them!!

I think the fresh fruit and veg suggestion is reasonable as scientists accept a good diet can affect behaviour and this could make the life of prison officers a little easier.
Having had a stinky footed brother with a tendency to trump at night, I can whole heartedly approve of the fresh air in their cells requirement.
As for the rest, 'Leave it out!'
Do we really want fitter, tougher and faster criminals back on the street?

Surely the victims of whatever crimes that put them in there had rights as well, rights that the criminals saw fit to trample on.
They've shown their contempt for other peoples rights so as far as I'm concerned deserve no better themselves.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you and all that.

Fancy giving inmates vegetables, eh? It's complete idiocy. Just because they're cheap and healthy doesn't mean it's right, you know! What's wrong with turkey twizzlers and Mars bars in batter, heh? Bring back scury and ricketts for all!
Now excuse me whilst I go and batter this six-inch nail even futher into my own brain using my jerking knee as a hammer.

All of the things that you have listed in your question souind extremely sensible and reasonable to me, and I don't understand why anybody would be against the idea of introducing them. The only people who would be concerned about this proposal would be an insane hippopotamus from the Andromeda Galaxy.
IMHO I think once you have committed a crime ,you lose aal your rights until such time as Society deems you have paid the price for your crime. Has nobody ever thought it's because of the good conditions in prison that criminals keep going back inside ,home from home and in some cases even better .I know this site has a lot of bleeding-heart lefties and I don't wish to hear from you about rehabilitation and all that c??p.If it works why are the prisons full to overflowing ?there is no deterrent in the genteel punishment which is handed out today and therefore they carry on while you and I and all decent hard-working people pay taxes to keep the scum in semi-luxury.
People aren't normally born bad. They get that way due to a thousand and one influences during their life. You will not be the same person today as you were when you were growing up. I'm not saying that everyone from an underprivileged or abusive background is going to grow up with criminal tendencies - most people have an inbuilt sense of self-worth and will want to 'better' themselves in any way they can, even if their surorunding influences are desperate. However, malign influences do lead some people to do evil, stupid, dangerous and reckless things, because they know no better and lack the wit, basic decency or education to improve themselves. I don't agree that prison should be a soft option with automatic privileges, but I do think that treating people with a degree of respect and educating them in the normal behaviours of a civilised society might make them less likely to offend, if and when they are released, and I'm NOTtalking about those people who committ capital crimes, who are a different matter altogether. If you've never been taught these things, how can you be expected to know? Suppose I'd better sit back now and wait for the brickbats to arrive from the Red Top readers..............................
