How To Replace A Grohe Shower Bar Flow Cartridge

The shower is stiff to turn on and off and it seems the flow cartridge needs cleaning of replacing. However,I can't get to the nut to remove the cartridge as there is is a grey bit that seems to cover it. Any ideas?

The screw that afford access to the shower cartridge is usually under a piece of metal or plastic that looks like it's part of the tap, but it's usually just a case of levering out the piece using a very small screwdriver.
