Most rescue places will want to 'vet' your home to check that it will be suitable for the hopeful new member of the family, they will also do their best to match your family with a suitable dog, IE if you've children they'll advise you of the ones who are used to being around children etc.
Most will expect a donation which sometimes can be surprisingly expensive- but when you consider where the money is going it's worthwhile.
Good luck :-)

Just to say, please consider an older dog instead of a pup or very young dog. The young-uns get homes very easily and the poor slightly older dogs can sit there for ages. When I worked at Battersea we had so many lovely lovely dogs who I would have taken home with me in an instant if I could have, who just sat in the kennels for anything up to a year for no good reason except that nobody would give them a chance because they were older than others!
Heres a link to a rescue which always has new dogs looking for homes, some ex breeding ones in a really sorry state.

Good luck with finding your dog, you will love having a rescue dog, I have 2 and it's so great to know that you are giving a home to a dog that really needs one.

Be prepared for naughtiness, no matter how good your lovely new dog seems. My rescue dog was on his best behaviour for the first 2 weeks I had him, and then he tested his boundaries for about a month, and he was sooooo naughty. Don't put up with it - be firm, but kind! He was the same way for about a year, good for a couple of weeks, then naughty for a couple of weeks until he finally settled down.
Best thing you could do!! Well done!!
