Cameras are set up on top of traffic lights for various reasons, including simply monitoring the traffic flow. So not every camera automatically records the fact that a vehicle has crossed the white line when the signals are at red.

Assuming, though, that the offence is recorded, then a fixed penalty notice would normally be issued. This would require payment of a 60 fine and the driver would also have to send his licence off. This would be returned with 3 points on it.

Mistakenly?? you mean you forgot red means stop
Or you were pre occupied and did not notice it changing despite the amber light before it? which incidently means stop also
Are you sure your not mistaking the 'camera' for a motion sensor, Thats whats on top of most traffic lights.
Gatso type cameras are normally used in jumping red light offences.
if it's acctv camers, you'll be fine.
If it's a red light camera, you'll get a fine and points as Chris says. Red light cameras are usually mounted on separate poles.

i dont like your attitude hedgehog, it was my friend i was asking after, who is a very careful driver, she saw green on the traffic light and after she had gone through she noticed the car behind her did not follow. this could have been because there was a red light or as it was a learner, they could hvae stalled. please don't make cruel assumptions its not an attractive asset to anybody.
now i'd say noticing what the car behind you is doing is actually very attentive and careful driving..wouldn't you?
thanks to the others for your help.
I got fined 250.00 with three points for jumping a red light on a deserted country road at 5.30 in the morning.
I thought that was a bit steep after expecting (wrongly) a fixed penalty notice and 60.00 fine.
Unfortunatly many of the red light cameras do not take a photo with the light in view. If a computer error occurs and you go through a green light and the camera triggers (if it has not been given the correct signal) then you pay the fine and receive the points. there is no way around this.
It has happened on several occasions. (proved by additional cctv in a city centre that caught the car and the light). this driver got away with it.

not happened to me.

Rob
You could have 'Mistakenly' killed a biker.!
If you mistakenly jump red traffic lights, whether there is a CCTV camera on top or not the result could be death or maiming, of you or someone else, take your pick!

some of you are being helpful, the rest of you i would request if you have nothing useful to say then say nothing at all, don't you think my friend knows she could have killed someone? don't you realise that as drivers we all endanger our own and other peoples lives a few times a day just simply by driving at all. THINK!
