This can happen from growing-up and being constantly belittled (by parents and/or friends) and from poor self image.
I used to have quite low self esteem because I was bullied at school but this faded as I got a bit older, and started to realise that I was worth something. Now I am much more confident about myself. Making new friends when I started work was a big help.
One way to overcome it is to distance yourself from the people who put you down. Even if this means being on your own for a while, you will learn about your good points and this will come across to new people that you meet.

Im still not the most confident person in the world but I feel that setting myself goals and reaching them really makes me feel better about myself and more confident.
When I first met my boyfriend I was poor, a student, no job, couldnt drive, was overweight and unhealthy. With motivation and encouragement from him I completed my course and got a distinction , got a job I enjoyed (at the time!!), passed my driving test, got fit and healthy. So really I think achieving what you want(realistically) in life can do wonders for your self esteem.
