Or would we have read in the papers that there is a particular virulent strain of the flu going round and we need to be careful.

// I think that someone, somewhere would have cottoned onto the fact//
Oh come on sqad - be serious - of course not - this is AB !
Thanks for the link Woof, interesting.
yes, a very interesting read.
We might have been wearing masks. I’ve seen pictures of people wearing masks during the Spanish Flu outbreak. Other than that I think things would have gone on much as usual except, I think the government might have suggested old people stay in where possible.
24 hour TV was available in 1980 and we would have been bombarded with bulletins on measures being taken.

Now 70 years ago we had the radio, and that would have responded in the same manner as it did in 1939-45 with daily advice, guidance, and instruction.

Cyberspace merely follows these traditions. Old ways, new media.
// as it did in 1939-45 with daily advice, guidance, and instruction.//
yeah but no but

the advice was to have the radio or hem hem wireless on the whole time - and "someone to man the radio" - sit there listening to it whilst knitting or peeling potatoes or something

"someone to man the X " later became a by-word for "I want to sit on my bottom and do absolutely nothing"

oh those were the days!
