very excited review on imdb - all american young girls it seems like and liking it alot ! - girl does well at chess
and was there ever such a gel? nope - cpmplete fiction
Some of the plot is real. The girl being adopted to shore up a marriage: it doesnt work.
the institution was a bit sugary - I was a prep school and I dont think a master ever quoted shakespeare out of class - and I can't remember much inside the classroom. Certainly not a servant or waiter. -
The children werent sedated wholesale but sixties, it was said the national servicement were .- I cant really think the Great and Good expected the tommies to shoot adeni arabs dosed up to the eyeballs. The drug "used" was chlordiazepoxide ( Librium) and it was certainly around then. as for using it to expand consciousness - yes that was the sixties talk but it never worked (*)
Her absences ( Joylene's) in the cellar would have been noticed and one of the other classmates would have 'told' - the prohibition 'Oh I dont think a young girl should do that' wd be much quicker.
And the path to fame and glory is not as smooth ( as we all know: here we are on AB and Trump is president )
and there is far too much "I want to help"
and not enough of "lets do her down because it is fun if we do!"
and not nearly enough " I am not going to help: because I am just not going to. but I know I will tell her I will!" [classic shafting]
and no: "join this show and pay up - no chance of winning of course but we need your subs ...."
and too much of - arm gonna whup your arriss
and then she does so
(*) oh yeah
the vicar of dibble does a good impression of the actress "ultra-violet" one of Andy Warhol's young ladies
" yeah well right you know - like it means yrsh you'e free"
Very good series, I thought. Particularly enjoyed the fact that, although one of the running themes is the sexism Harmon initially faces, the series also pays homage to what I think (hope!) is the universal truth that genius appreciates genius.
