Yellowing Headlights

My daughters little Peugeot 107 has some yellowing on her headlights, not very bad but bad enough. We have tried the toothpaste method and it seemed to remove the top layer as the toothbrush was brown and gunky but didn’t touch the under layer even after much rubbing. I have been all over the internet and looked at loads on YouTube. I think we will have to resort to the wet sanding method with some uv protection eventually, but we just want to make it better for now. So much confusing info, use metal polish, don’t use metal polish, use a razor blade, do not use a razor blade, and a lot of very different views on the various kits/creams etc used to supposedly clear the headlights. Before we resort to the wet sand method, has anyone actually tried something that works but doesn’t damage the plastic. Thank you for any advice.

I use wet and dry 1200, then G3 cutting compound then G10.

I use this stuff on my truck headlights (which are plastic). Takes 5 minutes a side and brings them up a treat! One cloth to put the polish on, one to clean it off...job done. If your lights are really yellowed, you might have to do it a few times.
All the recommendations are simply abrasives, some costing a lot more than others, hence people suggesting toothpaste and metal polish which many people already have lying around the house so are free to try; Cif kitchen cleaner should also be worth a try. If none of those work I'd go for TTT's suggestion of wet and dry.
You could maybe try some (hair care type) hydrogen peroxide....

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. I didn’t realise that all the kits are abrasive, I thought they must be something special/gentle so they didn’t damage the plastic. I might try the plast -ri first and see how I get on. Thanks everyone.
In our MX5 groups they all rave about the Turtle Wax kit.
