Your link disagrees with you, Caran. It says that the number of accidents fell to 40 from 86 the previous year. It's fatalities also include the Ukraine International flight that was shot down. Obviously the larger planes crashing have pushed up the number of fatalities.

Well spotted but of course its only a small increase of around 40 deaths and can be explained by the shooting down of the Ukranian flight by Iranian forces carrying 176 in January which was before Covid had really took off. The numbers will go up and down each year depending on the size of the planes that crash or get shot down, probably never bears much relation to overall flightloads across the world. But sorry if it was a lighthearted posts and a took it too serious

Air deaths are calculated by the total number of miles flown by the total number of passengers killed.

176 people died in the Iran incident. In 2019 that number would have been divided by 4 billion miles travelled by plane passengers.
In 2020 that figure halved to 2 billion miles travelled by air passengers. So the same calculation would result in the showing that the danger of death DOUBLED.

In short, it is an anomaly and risk of dying on a flight did not double.

When I fly (I vaguely remember doing so in the dim and distant past) as far as I'm concerned the most hazardous part of the journey is getting to the airport. If I manage that unscathed I'm home and dry.
