I would like to know if it is possible to download messages into my inbox automatically without clicking the Send/Receive button first. I have a feeling that I have been able to do it before, but have forgotten how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

click on tools, then options, then the Mail Set-up Tab and tick the box 'send immediately........' . Hopefully that is what you mean?

Go to tools ->options->general, and click the send and receive messages at startup box.
