Dog Licence

Wasn't sure whether to put this in law or animals so went for this one,no doubt someone will tell me if it's in the wrong cat. :o)
When did they cease,how much did they cost,and why did they get rid of them?

I think dog licenses were abolished in the 1980s the fee was about �1.00 and it was costing more to process the licenses than they were taking in revenue and hardly anybody bothered about getting one anyway.

Yes, I think it was in 1987, I remember paying 7s 6p in old money, a very looong time ago!!

Wouldn't you think it would be better to re -introduce it for every dog and bumped the price up for it ? Peeps might think before getting a dog ?

Folk in Ulster still need a licence to keep a dog and the standard one costs �5 a year. If you have no idea what
7s 6d is, its 37 1/2p in decimal currency and went down to 37p when the halfpenny was ditched in 1984.

It was abolished in 1988 and cost 37p (used to be 7s and 6p (thirty-seven and a half pence but they dropped the half pence).

It was abolished because it cost more to collect and administer than it was bringing in, and so few people bought them. Although they have them in Northern Ireland, it has not helped the dog problems over there, and over 3.000 stray dogs were put down last year. I would rather see people having to take a test and be approved to own a dog, and also before breeding a litter, rather than just be able to buy a licence. What difference does the cost make, when people can pay hundreds of pounds for a pedigree dog and then still abandon it?
