Do we really need scientists to tell us that many people are doing less exercise and watching more TV than in the first lockdown? Have they not noticed that it's colder, wetter and darker now and therefore neither the time nor the season for outdoor activity?
and the gyms and swimming pools are closed ... again. Added to that we are all really fed up with being stuck indoors without seeing those we normally spend time with so cake seems to be an excellent way to pass the time whilst watching dreadful tv...
It is research rather than medical science.
Confirming things we already know isn’t entirely pointless. They already know that winter is a factor, so they are looking for other factors as well. On the basis of the results, they can plan to encourage healthy living when the weather gets better and lockdown ends.
They don’t want people to survive Covid only to die of being a slob.
On more than one occasion, what we might have thought was "obvious" or common sense turns out to have been wrong. So, even if not, it always makes sense to double-check to be sure.

true, PP, Peter O'Toole used to say the only exercise he took was walking behind the coffins of friends who took exercise. He made it to 81 and coached local kids' cricket.
