Thanks for stopping by, NACW! From my reading about the character involved, the two damaged or missing parts are the right eye and the right arm. I cannot see or imagine anything else.

Yes, Neveracrossword - I'm still not happy with that idea and hope there's a better one. I'm treating the preamble as an exercise in deception - it certainly leads me to assume there's something cryptic going on!
I think you should avoid giving too much information in your questions in future, Matakari - there's enough ill-will from crossword editors/setters as it is without such blatant information being passed on (your question could spoil the challenge for a solver who's not activly looking for answers online).

It's not 'selfless', Matakari - I'd like advanced cryptics like this one to reach as wide an audience as possible, the more demand there is, the more puzzles we're likely to get (and the more people we'll have setting them). I found it a struggle getting started before online help became available but it quickly became apparent that some people 'in the know' wanted to limit its appeal (and I think that creates a degree of antagonism that we should all try to minimise).

If 'teachers teach and doers do', I'd call myself a 'doer', what about you, Matakari?

I love your philosophical approach to things, Professor. And I always marvel at your proficiency and vast knowledge in working out crosswords so quickly! In fact, what do we have to lose in helping one another, especially those who want to learn? I have been a teacher of French language and literature for a number of years at the secondary level and also privately and I've always liked to impart my knowledge to the less fortunate. That adage about teachers and doers has always intrigued me, though.

The 'doings' of good teachers will have had far more impact than any of mine.
As for my 'proficiency' - what there is of it comes from decades of doggedness (and that wouldn't have been enough without the sheer pleasure I get from 'wasting' so much time on these puzzles).
