From "Holidays Uncovered" (just the one review): We booked a 3* allocation on arrival with Thompson and found ourselves in the Grand hotel. This hotel is really nice and the rooms in the hotel are lovely. HOWEVER, beware, Thomson will try and place you in the Annex which are only 2 star accommodation. The hotel upgraded our room to one in the main hotel but we had to pay the difference. We kicked up a stink when we were there and I rep was very good but could do little. when we got home we complained in writing and sent a copy of the letter to ABTA. We got the money back that we had to pay for our upgrade.
As for the location. Croatia is clean, safe and welcoming. The People were so friendly that it left a lasting impression and we would go somewhere else in Croatia. There are loads of trips you can take to some of the Islands around Dubrovnik. Its also quite cheap compared to Spain and Greece. If you are a vegetarian try to go self catering as they did not cater for vegetarians in the Grand Hotel (we had omlette every night).
There is only one drawback and that is if you are an animal lover you will be really upset by the number of stray dogs, cats and kittens. We fed one little kitten for the days we were there and left money in a local cafa for her food but I dont think she would have survived very long in the winter. It really is heartbreaking and there were people there who said they would never go back because of it. Just remember not to throw your food away and to give your left over meat to the strays outside your hotel.
