Training my pup
10 Answers
I have a male king charles cavalier who likes to wee....everywhere but the paper. He is almost 6 mths and i feel none of the training is working, ive done the rub his nose in it and lock him outside for 20 mins for his bad behaviour. this he really hates cos he is such a real house dog, he's so freaked by water and pools that he wouldn't even walk on a foot path that had a puddle of rain, so he especially doesnt like when he gets put outside for his peeing, even when it's a small shower.I also notice he never does a no. 2 on the paper either, he seems to do his business at the opposite door in my kitchen , so i end up trampsing into it when i enter the room. Any tips on how to succesfully train a very stubborn pup.

You need patience and it's 24/7 . He needs routine .When he starts looking as if he wants to wee or poop take him outside to a certain spot. Take him outside at regular intervals. When he performs ,praise and praise again. Play with him ,give him a treat and more praise.
It's no good locking him outside ..you have to be with him and encourage him to perform.Use a certain command everytime.

He can't associate going in the garden with being let back in again, as dogs can't make this kind of connection. As said earlier, you need to make out that peeing where you want him to is the best thing he's ever done.
If, and only if, you catch him in the act of peeing inside, you can say "NO", very firmly, pick him up and rush him outside. Then, even if he only manages another drop, praise him.
Good luck.

It takes a lot of patience and I wouldn't think shutting him out for 20 min would help. He won't associate the garden as being a very nice place if he thinks he is going to be shut out. We used to make a point going outside with ours after each meal. Also watching to see if he starts mooching about looking for somewhere to go for a wee. There will still be the odd accidents but he will get it in the end. Good Luck!
I have two King Charles pups (8 weeks) and have been crate training them as dogs dont like to mess in their own den. We take them out to their pen in the garden after every feed, drink, playtime and nap and stay with them to give them lots of praise when they do their business. When they're free to play in living room, we have to keep an eye on them for their usual circling, sniffing etc indicating that they need to go then we take them straight outside and they are starting to understand now. We have very few accidents as long as the pups are given adequate chances to do their business. Crate training doesnt just work on pups, you would be able to try it on a 6 month old.
Good luck!

Another thing worth trying is puppy pads, you can get them from big pet stores, they are impregnated with a special smell that encourages puppies to wee! As he is nearly 6 months old and he obviously doesn't understand housetraining (it's not his fault he just needs encouragement) then you might need these.Once he reliably goes on the puppy pad, use a word (busy or wee wee?) then move the pad gradually nearer the back door and eventually outside. It seems you have inadvertantly trained him to wee inside! Yep 24/7 routine for the next few weeks, watch him like a hawk for signs of needing to go, never rub his nose in it or send him outside alone,he is getting very confusing messages, the poor dog needs patience and a good routine as mentioned.
Thanks for the great advice, now i know not to leave him outside as punishment, you pick up terrible ways from other people and family members who tell you it's the only way. I do blame myself too as i should have looked into it more before i got him, i naiively believed trainiing would take only a week or 2!! So now i'm in trouble, i work in the mornings from 9 - 1, my partner is at home at these times, his only interest is playing video games and he doesnt like leaving gizmo wonder around the house just keeps him confined to the kitchen, he tells me he's getting irritated by the mess gizmo keeps making but i know myself he wont even let the back door open for him so if gizmo does decide to go outside he can't anyway, when im'm at home and i see gizmo go outside and do his business i praise him loads, but because of me being away it's like anything he learns gets reversed.
So yes I will get those pads for sure, and is there anything else I should be doing say at night time when I go to bed and he is left to himself.
One person mentioned straight after mealtimes also, this was grand at the beginning because he would eat and i'd bring him out for 10 min - 15 mins for him to go. But his mealtimes aint set no more, he refuses to eat the food when it's out until late at night when he knows he won't be getting anything else. This is frustrating me , and ll because someone gave him chicken!!!!!

Put his food down at a certain time ...give him a chance to eat it .If he doesn't eat it take it away ...he won't starve !!
Offer it to him again after a suitable interval. You will have to persist and he will soon get the message.
Shaney likes chicken and all sorts of other delicacies but he knows he doesn't get them on a regular basis!
Also ..and I do not mean to personal here..but your partner should get up of his bum and let the poor dog out !
He is being totally unfair to you and the dog.

We go through a little charade every few months with our fussy shepherd deciding he doesn't feel like eating. He doesn't have worms or anything, so we just leave him alone with his food for 10 - 15 mins or so, and then pick it back up. He sometimes goes for a couple of days without eating.
We think that dogs who are starved will eat wood, if they have to, so if food is offered and he's hungry enough, he'll eat it.
He's especially bad if he goes to stay with someone, and they pander to him and give him more interesting food. He gets all insulted that all we have on offer is plain old dog food!!
Bless them all!!

i agree about crate training, we crate trained our setter who is now 9 months and have hardly any accidents.
and find a place in the garden that is his to do his business and escort him there use a word he will recognise wee or busy or whatever and when he uses that place loads of praise and a treat. he will soon get the message. well after a month or so.

Firstly i have to ask why you felt the need to rub a dogs nose in his wee what was the purpose of that.the sure fire way of training any pup is praise and patience you put him out regulary give a command eg be quick or what ever and wait and you repeat this untill he goes you then praise reward like mad hes the best thing since sliced bread if he dosent go you calmly bring him back in you do not lock him out as this is causing stress you do not rub his nose init this is causing fear they dont understand bad behaviour he is not a stubborn pup just very confused
