Went a drive to a small town yesterday, one I'd never been before, saw a little private run cafe, guess what, I sat outside and ordered a coffee £2.40, not only that, when she bought my change back, I gave her a sixty pence tip. I'm wondering now if I'm going off the rails and losing all sight of common sense.

I had post office saving stamps too and a money box for half of my pocket money.
I would just hate to have to watch where every penny is going and, fortunately, I don't have to.

I am sure that you will return and be your "usual self". Out to lunch tomorrow ... it will not even enter our heads to bother about the prices. We have already made sure that we can give the waiting staff a thank you to take home, besides our default demeanour of gratitude and appreciation.
This is a direct copy and paste from my post on an AB thread about tipping, back in 2015:

"Around 20 years ago, I was on my own on Christmas Day and decided to try out an Indian-East African fusion restaurant in south London that Time Out said would be open. I had one of the dearer starters, a higher-priced main course, a dessert and two glasses of lassi. The food was all freshly-prepared to order and was possibly the best meal I've ever had. The company was delightful too, as everybody was talking to complete strangers on other tables in the restaurant. On a day when my local pub would have charged me £35 for a bog-standard turkey lunch, my bill came to £10.80 but the restaurant owner then rounded that down to a tenner! I happily paid that tenner - and left a twenty quid tip on top!"

Despite being on my own, and not even having a booking for the restaurant, I had one of the best Christmas Day's possible, due to the fantastic restaurant staff. If was well worth the two hundred miles driving to get me there and back, so I didn't begrudge leaving a decent tip ;-)
No, you are not going off the rails, you are a thoughtful person who values the service you got. I also always leave a tip.
I was staying at a place for a couple of days and having seen in films tip the waiter for special service. I slipped him a tenner, he slipped me some cold porridge. The dinner that night was fish, stone cold, I left it.
