Rte crosswords sometimes feature these odd near-homophones (craven/craver/craving) but I'm not sure it's right.
Perhaps 'the craven' is a 'chocolate soldier'?
'Crunch' is a chocolate bar, that helps a bit.

...there's an alternative spelling - chocAholic - but I went for 'choco' as it's Aussie slang for a 'chocolate soldier.'

I don't think it's a typo, elliemay1 - the surface only works using ''craven,'' 'when it comes to the crunch'.

Actually, I think you might be right, 'craver' makes more sense of 'bar' in the alcoholic sense!
