My dual fuel was with Ebico and I was quite happy with them, but they have transferred me to British Gas. My gas tariff ends July 2021 and I think I have my electricity with them until 2022. I would like to change to a cheaper dual fuel. Do I have to pay a fee to cancel my electricity with BG in July, and can anyone recommend the best value for dual fuel? I didn’t want to use British Gas in the first place. Ebico have now sent me an email introducing me to Octopus. Should I use them ? It is all so confusing. Thanks all.

Well, Octopus Energy and Pure Planet are the only two energy providers that Which? recommends..see link.

It depends on the conditions of the tariff you are on whether you have to pay to leave.

I use Martin Lewis's Cheap Energy Club to find the best tariff. Personally I don't go to the newbie companies, because so many fold and leave you in the situation you are in. My cheapest big name was British Gas, and that's who I'm with.
I've switched to Octopus. So far they are fine. British Gas I would never touch again; they only ever contacted us when they thought we might move away. My view was that an offer by BG to put us on a better deal meant that they had been ripping us off for years.
I'm not sure if they could hold you to a contract term if the company has changed hands. The compare sites sometimes tell you if you will need to pay an exit fee. Octopus gets good reviews. I'm with Shell (previously First Utility) but will do a compare when current contract ends.
I guarantee that if you contacted BG to say that you were leaving them, you would get their special squad on the phone within minutes. If they did that then it's up to you what to do. I couldn't stomach it and preferred to move whatever BG was offering.
None of them are particularly good. I was with Eon (or their predecessors that they took over) for thirty years. However their admin, and ability to sort issues is now zero. I left, and will never use them again.
