Alpaca And Llama

just bought a copy of a magazine for smalholders, to read on the train (apparently Health and Efficiency isn't sold anymore). There were loads of adverts from people selling alpacas. Nobody was offering llamas. Leaving aside the question of what kind of smallholding supports a herd of alapacas, llamas are much more fun. Is it simply that people think that they can make an income out of alpaca hair, whereas llamas are more a pack, beast of burden , animal?

Camelids aren't great meat eaters !


Can't find anything about requiring a zoo licence. However, nowadays moving any livestock like them requires a permit, washing the animals etc, and the use of an approved carrier. This is all part of preventing diseases being spread. And you have to notify DEFRA of any of certain diseases e.g foot and mouth

Fred, I think that if left unattended the hounds would chase or worry alpacas, we would keep ours on long training leads and make sure they are totally Ok with them before letting them off lead, we still would never leave them unattended with any of our animals. They are pretty good with our chickens now that they know they must not chase them. The first time they came across a chicken face to face they nearly killed it, all three hounds were playing tug of war but just for a split second, surprisingly the chicken survived unscathed and still laying eggs 12 months later. The chicken actually managed to escape her run. These days the if one escapes, the hounds are very interested but do not chase it.
