He didn't believe in vaccination either - the New York Times wrote, 'Mr. Wallace’s father, Russell Wallace, said his son firmly believes mask and vaccination requirements are a violation of personal liberties. “After watching all the government overreach here he decided he wanted to do something about it,” Russell Wallace said.'
I'm not sure it's exactly irony, it's just a natural outcome of his actions. Not the only possible outcome, to be sure, but the fewer precautions you take against Covid the greater your chances of catching it.
