Ich, grumpy and i are discussing the overseas award. Do keep up :-)
Grumpy, i hadn't really thought of the overseas award until you mentioned it and now i come to think of it, is there anyone more deserving of it than Djokovic? Is there anyone out there who has dominated their sport this year in the same way he has? Off the top of my head, i cannot think of a single sportsperson who has.
Sorry I did read through to see if I had missed something.
Thank goodness you are, because much as I am as enthralled by ER, I am heartily sick of the hype.
The only name I've not seen mentioned here is Adam Peaty, who was a phenomenon in the pool at the Olympics.
Perhaps Joe Root could be an outside bet for a nomination given his stats for this year, although a lack of silverware is an obvious hurdle for him.
I wish I could think of someone who might challenge Djokovic for the overseas award, as I can't stand him, but I've got nothing. At a push, Collin Morikawa has had a great year for a rookie.
Maybe Simone Biles, given her story (having struggles early in the Olympics, overcoming them to get a bronze). Long shot, and probably has faded from people's memory, though.
Or Leylah Fernandez, because we may as well stick to tennis!
I was hoping to find a firm that was doing e.w. bets, Mozz, as i also believe Peaty would have had a chance but for Emma's win in NY.
Don't agree with you on Djokoman, though. I absolutely love the guy and it really is a shame he couldn't win last night. One game too many, perhaps? As it is, Medvedev was outstanding and it won't be that long before he's adding to it.
Just had a look at the full list of winners, Jim, and i see that all the recipients were 'winners'. Don't see too many runners-up on the list. Simone Biles won it in 2016 after her 4 gold medals. As for Morikawa, Mozz, his golf sort of went to pieces after he had won The Open - just ask my pocket :-(
Well, Morikawa was a bit of a stretch. I think Djoko has it in the bag.
I hope the British Paralympic squad get the team prize, but I suspect the England Football team will, unless the Ryder Cup is a massive European voctory.
Mozz,if you accept the premise that winners usually take the awards then England Football team cannot win the award and also I throw in the Solheim Cup team.
Ken - I thought you were referring to sportsmen; anyone who smashes his raquet on court CANNOT be classed as a sportsman. A disgraceful example for the children.
Grumpy, personally I agree, but SPOTY do often like to take the popular vote. The Solheim Cup ladies are a great shout, they were spectacular, and I thoroughly enjoyed the competition.
I would love Karsten Warholm the Norwegian 400m hurdler to win the overseas award. Smashed the world record in the Olympic final and just great to watch.
“ Oh, that's a pity. I guess I'll have to... hype her up even more!!! MUAHAHA”
It’s not the discussions here so much it’s the rather cringeworthy media stuff. And it’s really based on the fear it won’t we lived up to.
It’s not so long ago she was being castigated as a bottler.
