Roof insulation

I am considering replacing the glass fibre between the joists with a less obnoxious product which will not affect the lungs. There are items on the market such as thermal wrap which is very thin and relatively expensive. Would this do the same job as the fibre glass and has anyone used it?

I doubt that it would have the same insulating properties as the thicker fibre glass.

Have you considered using polysterene beads ?

I saw a program once where someone was building a eco friendly house. They used sheeps wool that was tightly packed together.

I wouldn't put polystyrene beads between the joists especiually where cables are run - polystyrene has a detrimental effect the cable insulation.

The product you are referring to is probably this one http://www.tri-isosuper9.co.uk/home.htm . Contrary to the above advice, it can and does have a thermal rating far greater than glassfibre, for an equivalent thickness. The other products to consider are Kingspan or Celotex sheets (these are brand names of the UK market-leaders of the product). It is a rigid foam, not as thin as tri-iso, but probably cheaper for the same thermal insulation.

Fibre glass also used to have a detrimental effect on the 'older' type of PVC cable too !
