My friends son has just started college. He will only be there 3 and a half days of the week. they claimclaim Family allowance, is there anything that he can claim as he cant take a full time job, and will be quite difficult to work part time because of the days that he does.

if your doing under 16 hours in college you'll probably be entitled to some level of housing/council tax benefit depends on the individual case
depending on what course he is doing she could still get tax credits. she will need to imform them of what course he is doing. i got while my daughter went to college.
Do you mean Child Benefit?
Realy it depends if the course is classed as fulltime or not - some courses for 16 hours a week are classed as fulltime as the home study is meant to take up quite a bit of time too.....if it is classed as a fulltime course and the son is under 19, it would be worth applying to his local education authority for an Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) - if they do these in their local council. They usually amount to 30 quid a week providing the student attends every lesson.....
