I have to travel to Stafford which is a return journey of 340 miles. I can claim fuel allowance but they want to know how many litres I am claiming for. I have a little Citroen Berlingo van that probably does around 40 to the gallon on a run, so how many litres should I claim for? I have no idea about litres, I still work in old money.

Not just me then.......
I'm surprised too - why don't they allow you to claim HMRC's tax allowance, currently 45p/mile for the first 10k......
If you work out the total cost of running the car fuel may be less than 50%, so if they only pay for fuel used they are getting it on the cheap.
Lankeela, did my explanation at 14:08 help you understand how the figure was arrived at?
Well well, I also just googled 8.2 gallons (340/40) to litres and got the US version so 32. I didn't even know a US gallon was different.
Why not top it off before you go then do the same when you return and the receipt will tell you how many litres you used. Most vehicles will do 340miles without refuelling.

TTT I didn't even try to read the explanation because it means nothing to me. I just get a mental block with figures, apart from adding up which I can do quickly without even thinking about it!

The reason for not being able to do the journey and then claim is because it is not going to happen until 2025 but I need to book my fuel allowance now, on accepting the invitation.
Whether you can make sense of TTT's workings or not - his answer is correct.
Crap atCryptics is also crap at reading, apparently.
ok but you've given BA to the wrong answer.
by wrong, I mean incorrect.

Have taken your advice and changed the Best Answer(!)
How desperate are you to get a Best Answer?
I think it's less about BAs and more about being a bank of answers should anyone have a similar question on the future..
it's all I live for!
Thanks gingjbee for your inciteful comments but my solution does give the amount that should be claimed in litres which is what lankeela was asking for with minimum of fuss.
