These sorts of things happen a lot in F1. It's part and parcel of the sport. There have been other decisions through the season that, had they gone the other way, wouldn't have left the title decider as it was, level on points.
The bad thing for F1 is that they built up this championship decider like it was a heavyweight boxing title fight, and then they had another one of those "moments" that brings the result down to an official decision. But this time the world was watching, and saw something like the ref jump in on that title fight and award the fight to the challenger as they were taking a beating from the champ.
