Advocate For Cats

I use this every six weeks for my cat. Could I leave it for longer than six weeks or would it be less effective? It is such a kerfuffle ……

Advocate for cats is a flea and wormer spot on treatment for protecting against fleas, roundworm, lungworm, heartworm and ear mites. It is supplied in packets of 3 or 6 single use pipettes. Each screw cap pipette contains a solution containing Imidacloprid and Moxidectin which presents in a yellowy/brown liquid.

The dosage and strength of Advocate for cats treatment depends the size of cat and on why it's being used. Use Advocate for Small Cats if your cat weighs less than 4kg and Advocate for Large Cats if your cat weighs over 4kg. For cats larger than 8kg use the appropriate combination of Advocate for cat pipettes. One treatment of Advocate for cats treats any existing infestation and prevents future flea infestations for 4 weeks.

How to administer Advocate for Cats: Part the fur on the back of your cat's neck at the base of the skull. You may want to slightly dampen your fingers to part the fur, especially if they have a very thick coat. Where you can see skin place the top of the pipette and squeeze firmly several times to empty the contents onto the skin. Advocate for Cats is applied to the base of the skull to minimise the chances of your cat licking the product. Apply Advocate for Cats to your cats neck and the solution will quickly spread to kill 98-100% of fleas in just 12 hours. Only apply Advocate for Cats to undamaged skin. Do not use Advocate for cats in kittens under 9 weeks of age.

Advocate is intended for use every 4 weeks. Beyond that it's not going to give much, if any resistance, to fleas. (I've noticed that, irrespective of the product used, my cats start to pick up fleas a bit before the end of a four week cycle, so it's clearly not going to work beyond that period). However I don't bother with flea treatment for two of my three cats during the winter months anyway, as only one of them (who has a flea allergy) suffers any real problems with fleas outside of the warmer months.

Standalone worming treatments seem to keep on working for several months, so it might be that the worming element of Advocate will work beyond the 4 week period too. (I tend to only worm my cats when I notice problems).

I know what you mean about 'kerfuffle' though. My cat with a flea allergy should have had his flea treatment renewed a fortnight ago but I've not managed to catch him yet!

Well I have used Advocate on both my cats for years and can categorically say neither of them have fleas and I have been reducing the frequency of use for at least 3 years. I dose them more like every 3 months in the winter and maybe every couple in the summer. Maybe I'm lucky that my location or their outside habits mean they don't pick up fleas so easily.

Has your cat permanently got fleas? If not why are you continually putting chemicals into him? Treat them only when they have.
