Tits Like Coconuts - However, Sparrows Like Breadcrumbs!

We have a nesting box in the back garden and each morning we see three blue tits investigating it; one will sometimes enter and the other two keep an eye out. A couple of days ago I peeped in the top while they were not around (they usually only visit in the morning) and there was a layer of moss inside. They've been back since my visit so I don't think I have frightened them off.
It seems much too early for them to be nesting. Does anyone know what their normal habits are?

Some birds, including blue tits, use nest boxes for winter roosting. Just like us, they're not too keen on being out in the cold and wet when they can find somewhere nice and cosy instead!

Veryunlikely they’re nesting, more likely they’re using the box as a place to keep warm in overnight.
The moss you see is possibly nesting material from last spring.

Buen they weren't roosting when I inspected. Do they only roost at night? If so I mustn't go out there with a torch!

We quite often have up to 4 blue tits in and out of the box...I think they go in for bugs, as there are always loads of earwigs in there.

I've seen dozens of tits around dusk, flying up under the eves of my Neighbors house, to roost for the night.
