Get youself into a routine, eat 3 meals a day more or less at the same times, not necessarily large meals. Start relaxing around 8.00 p.m., snuggle down at 11.00 ish with a book, when your eyes are drooping, stop reading, put in your earphones and listen to a boring/soothing podcast that you have timed to finish in an hour or so. Works for me !
I'm just the same JJ! I am trying to put it right. I always have been a night owl, but it's getting ridiculous. And even when I get to bed I wake up frequently, sleep very lightly and every little sound wakes me. I end up getting a reasonable sleep from about 6.00am. All my aches and pains are much worse. But I really feel much better in all ways in the evening and half the night.
There does seem to be something strange going on sometimes. If I stay up until about 1.00am I will toss and turn for the rest of the night, if I turn in around 11.30 12 at the latest I sleep pretty good, and up at about 8.30, 9 at the latest.
I feel awful on waking to be honest! I don't get a restful sleep very often - I'm a light sleeper with vivid dreams or nightmares!!! I've a very over active mind!!
Sleep seems to be a problem for many older people, I think one of the main factors is lack of exercise during the day especially in the winter months when a lot have no choice but to stop in the warm house, then there's others who are less mobile anyhow. So all in all if you are sitting / resting all day its then very difficult to get off to sleep. You can only do so much hoovering and dusting :0)
If I dont go for even a short walk, I'm likely to find it difficult to get to sleep. Same if lights go out much after 1am. 12:30 seems to be my ideal. Lately it's been closer to 2am.
Sometimes I feel I've slept like a log...then my fitbit tells me how restless I've been. :(
