It can also be caused by stress. If you scratch too much it can cause infection to get into the skin and cause something called 'lizard skin'. I don't know the proper medical name. Try to rub instead of scratching (tip to me by my doc). Bathing in a luke warm bath with bicarbonate of soda can give you some relief, as can wearing only cotton next to your skin.

PHD - I have exactly the same symptoms, I have severe itching all over my body especially in the lower regions from my waist downwards, there is absolutely no rash but it is constantly itchy. I have seeked medical advice and been referred to a specialist, who said there was nothing wrong, don't wear tight clothes and basically live with it. I am desparate and have asked for a 2nd opinion. I would love someone to tell me what it is as i can't live with this for the next god knows how many years!!
