80's Childrens TV programme.

I am sure that I am not imagining this but nobody I Know remembers This programme. So I am sending it out to my fellow ab'ers.
This programme was on BBC1 in the early to mid 1980's
It had a very cheap feel to it. It was about the adventures of some space captain who was played by a live actor. He had a crew of fellow actors but all the scenery and the baddies were cardboard cut outs . there was a studio audience of children who would give there opinion on what should happen. It was very unusual and I have seen nothing else like it , but what was it called ? Help it's driving me crazy.
