Printer Stopped Working

My HP LaserJet P1606dn stopped printing suddenly - coincidentally after a Windows upgrade - even though still ticked as default printer. Thought best to remove and reinstall. That's when fun began.
Disconnected USB cable and downloaded software from HP website. Proceeded to installation and reconnected USB cable when requested. Icon then appears as "Unknown" device - nothing in printer section. Check properties and it shows up as a DVD drive!!!!! Window tells me that printer not installed - error. Not quite sure what is going on. Could it be that the USB cable is now faulty for some reason?
Any help with this is appreciated.
