Hello, Doc never fails to surprise! Managed to unravel this one though the rubric appeared at first misleading. The answer to the trio was an interesting discovery, indeed! The gridfill was pretty straightforward except for 34 (A) which was confirmed in the thesaurus.

Hi, Matakari. I'm sure you enjoyed seeing the discussions here about the theme, the trio, 34 A and so on - there were several threads.
I'm still not a Doc fan, and this puzzle did nothing to convert me!
I am still struggling with some of the unclueds. I get the 3 x 2 but in what way was the trio a discovery?
JohnPiper, maybe it's just that the trio is an interesting, unusual word?
I'm struggling with 42a and 6d.

?AR?E? NES?.
Garden nest?
Barren ness?

Also, 29d Fictional detective depressed, carried by horse. (7)
?A??O?E caboose? (buttocks)

Can't make sense of it.
29d marlowe
Tillyy2, for the other one, only one of your options has the letters in pairs, so would fit the theme.
Thank you, Ael.
Thank you, NAC.
So i have one pair and the trio to go
37a fully or bully
24a ?oor
21a ?hip
14a t?ot? Guessing Tooth?
39a ?ill
JohnPiper, detailed listings of the thematic stuff was given the other day - look at the thread Spec2565.
I'm beginning to agree with NAC about not being a fan of Doc!
Can I assume that 32a is FULLY as it's paired with SUCCESS at 17d
I have finished the crossword but of the unclued lights sweet and tooth don't follow the rules so they must be wrong.
14a, 15d
Tilly -- 3 and 4, 5 amd 6, 7 amd 8.
Novalis, thank you but I'm none the wiser.

All the other unclued lights have three sets of the doubles.
swEET TOOth
Tut! Thank you.
