Removal Of Spot On My Skin

I made an appointment to see a nurse about a small red area on my cheek that didn't go away. She didn't think it was anything to worry about but arranged for me to see a dermatologist. when I saw him, he didn't think it was anything either - just sun damage and very unlikely to develop into anything. He then asked me if I'd always had this other red spot next to it. I said no, that it was something that came up recently. He said he'd remove it.

A month later, it had shrunk down to almost nothing and I assumed he'd not want to do anything at my appointment to remove it. It had been a raised red mark, like a spot and now it was all but gone. He looked at it carefully and said that he still wants to remove it. This was a week ago.

I can't stop the thoughts in my head that he must have a good reason for wanting it removed i.e. suspicion of some sort of cancer. I'm waiting for the results which will probably be another week or so. Until then, how likely is this thing going to be cancer and if it is, how likely is it that it's going to threaten my life? Are most of them either nothing or something that can be dealt with? My 'spot' looks like nothing I've seen on any photos of every type of skin cancer, so I'm wondering why he wanted to remove it.

my uninformed guess is that if he thought it looked dangerous he would have done something about it a month ago. Why not ask him?

'skin cancer' is actually quite common but rarely 'spreads' he probably just wants to remove it to be on the safe side.
MIL has several removed a year

He wants to excise and biopsy it to exclude the unlikely event of it being cancer. The little "satellite" lesion next to the main lesion has unsettled him a little.

My money is on it being benign.

I waited for the result before replying. It was a basal cell carcinoma. The consultant said it was 'relatively harmless' doesn't shorten life and doesn't (usually)spread...wants to see me in six months. It's the 'best' sort of skin cancer you can get apparently. Not exactly joyful though!
