Something I can understand! It's amazing what modern science can achieve, a picture of a planet from 400 light years away!

Nice. I'm impressed how fast the new stuff is coming! Just to show off for a bit, it seems that I know one of the authors of the paper :)

You know someone who worked on this? That's amazing! How come? Are you like an actual scientist or something? Did you work on this yourself?
He's her window cleaner! LOL
400 light years! Blimey that's almost before I was born. ( I know it's distance not time - just funnin with ya.)
In the order that you asked:

-- Yes, but not very well, I think we both helped teach a topic together as PhD students, but anyway I recognised the name instantly (in the source paper linked at the end of the article, they aren't mentioned in the article itself).

-- Yes, currently working as a particle physics postdoc somewhere.

-- But no, I never touched astronomy. Definitely was interested in it as a child, but it's been ages since I decided to focus on the world of the very small instead of the very large!
It's no good, I still can't tell the mountains from the ocean. :-(
pssst

I have it on good authority , that's it's no longer there
