Where individual who was American said they wash and scrub their eggs and in some instances wash with bleach.
Why?
The most I have ever done is wipe over with a damp cloth and that is there is loose much on them.

I also just wipe mushrooms (if you peel a chestnut mushroom it loses most of its flavour) but I do trim the bottoms off the stems. That's because when I was a child, they were grown in horse manure - our local riding stables did a roaring trade. :)

Like gingebee says. Here's more info. I can't remember ever washing them though...maybe it's a recent thing
