Today, Ash Wednesday, is the first day of Lent. While reminders of mortality are not as popular as they once might have been Lent could still be used to kick start a change in lifestyle .

Good grief! How not to cheer Chatterbakers up. It’s being so cheerful that keeps you going, sandyRoe.

Sandy, my decision to ditch tea and coffee is part of my wider aim to reduce airmiles on everything I buy. I am trying to be as local as possible. I am enjoying varieties of mint tea and rosehip tea at the moment, home grown.
I've decided to adopt the maxim 'neither a borrower nor a Lenter be.'
Yes - I'm going to try and have pancakes more than once a year - I love them!!
I'd already decided that I needed to make a big effort to lose some extra weight, so I'm using Lent to kick-start it by giving up sweets. wish me luck. :)
I've been trying to cut back on biscuits & cakes. So far so good. I've been eating kiwi fruit last few days. I'd forgotten how lovely they are!
Pertinent…….means relevant . :-)
For what it is worth (given the bulk of the responses so far) the emphasis these days if you are wanting to observe Lent in some way is more on the positive than the negative so for example you can give up chocolate etc etc if you want but with the aim of donating the money you save to a charity.
I'm giving up lending or giving anything to anyone.

That's not nice. ;-)
No charity donations?
Not my religion, next festival for me is Eostre/ Ostara around the time of the equinox, as a pagan I will be obliged indulge in the goddesses bounty, ( mars bars, galaxy, cream eggs wine, ale, mead, cake etc ) we don't do denial, every day should be a celebration of life.
