The kind of sound I refer to is the 'clicking sound' we hear from the tower casing just before the computer is turn off. Sometime I hear this sound when the computer is idle and the HDD is very busy doing some writing or reading which I am not sure. Is it a sign of some kind of failure?

Not at all. The sound you hear when you turn the PC off is hard drive parking itself.

Thanks Simeon, what happen when I hear the parking sound when the computer is idle but a lot of activity on the HDD? I am not doing anything on my computer at this time (i.e. download, music etc)
The only time i've ever heard a clicking sound from the hard drive, it's been a sign of imminent failure. In your position I would make sure I had a good backup.
