So I wonder, with a rapidly growing atheist and declining religious population I wonder when we will see an atheist coronation, most likely not in our lifetime unless maybe Edrward is a closet atheist.
It would certainly be a very different coronation ceremony.
To be honest, I don't think royalty should be so tied into religion. of course, Their personal lives, they choose what they wish but I don't think in this day and age it should be a part of our sovereignty. It's just too outdated!

Atheists coronation? You must be joking! Even if Christianity dies out what about all the other religions rapidly rising in the UK?
Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism just to mention a few.
Nah,you have lost me there, peter.By the way can you translate James Joyces Ullysses for me at the same time.
Rowan
in my fruitless sesarch fo any sign of Ideas of Kingship
I found

which may give you a few ideas about kingship in other societies
Nah,you have lost me there,peter.
what, you no understand: "A man has had a crown jammed on his head. It took three hours"
yup got it
Carry on ABers ! - normal day on AB
Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism just to mention a few.

chrissakes, they have all had kings which might lead you to conclude Kingship is a feature of society and NOT of a religion. ho hum.
You make my day,Peter.May you never leave this site.I think i just coughed up my tea at your last posting.
"coughed up my tea laughing"
The Monarch is head of the Church of England so pretty obviously it is going to be a Christian service. Personally i find the idea of an atheist Coronation too miserable to comprehend
Henry VIII established the role of the monach as head of the church, to allow himself freedom to change the rules. The next monach would be perfectly within his/her rights to change it back. I certainly would if I were next in line. I'd hand over head of the church to the Arch Bish, and I'd have the coronation in the palace or maybe the Royal Albert Hall. I woudnt need so much room for guests as I'd have disbanded the commonwealth by then and to cut down on air miles, we'd invite the most important international heads of state attend virtually.
Maydup - I think that is a general "nope"
He made himself via a series of Supremacy Acts the supreme governor of the Church but not theological head.
He I agree did some odd things - divorce fr'instnace - even tho there is clear NT references to 'no divorce'. Henry still accepted transubstantiation ( =..... oh forget it)

The next monarch cd change it back - but EdwVI was more extreme. He was the one who translated the coronation service into English.

mary I DID change it back ( counter reformation)

and Elizabeth I changed it back again ( restored reformation)

By this time it was not in the personal gift of the monarch - Mary nor Elizabeth did not and cd not say - "foo I dont like confesh, so that is now 6 sacraments"

James I did not say - "oh god look at these translations of the bible: I can do a much better job!"
in fact he asked teams of translators - London OXford and Cge I think to do the job for him.

so by 1600, the choice for the monarch was limited

as for Charlie boy revamping the service
I think the Bish said - - you cant, you havent been anointed ( given your ticket)
I reckon he said, "so it works out you can only change it for your son, and hey do you think he wants the free-for-all?"

Also wivda multi faiths at the door - I reckon he called them together weeks before and they said "look it is obviously an Anglican service and we doan really wanna interfere" and bishie-baby breathed a sigh of relief and said "thank God for that! holy Mary Mudda of God"
and Cardinal Archbishop Nichols said " That's my line"

Boris "did the I can do anything I am PM" and look where it got HIM !
too long
I shouldda stuck to - - 'foo no!' and left it at that

has anyone noticed the step shift in Beeb coverage
from ignorant beeb fluffies talking about people's participation in full post-colonial neo marxist flow.
to
explanation of the historical ( unchanging) roots and therefore the ritual and doctrinal meaning at the time ( of the rite's composition)

= wot it meant to Dunstan when he wrote it for Edgar in oo 876 AD.

Olusaga's cant on what the contribution of afrocaribbeans contribution to the Coronation has been consigned to er the rubbish cart. ( There isnt one, too twentieth century in a tenth century rite)
Would you slow down with your postings Peter.I cant keep up with you.The new Ulysses as written by Peter Pedant and Myfanwy Smithson.
The Monarch is head of the Church of England so it is pretty obvious it is going to be a Christian service.

um nope - this is AB - ter daah ! The obvious is not obvious and the first shall be last ( bitta revelations there, missed I daresay by all you godless proles)
er there was this saint ( Dunstan)
who was pretty savvy
and rewrote the coronation service
in Latin for Edgar
oo long time ago 870 AD
dat a long long time ago
he put in Homage ( lately erm taken out)
to match the Frankish Kings
( but I thought the Holy Roman Emperors)
the end

They were carrying around some Early Gospels altho they were relics of the saints (*)
and a proddy next to me said " its a thing - a holy thing! all this is a bit Romish innit. what next incense and ting-a-ling?"
This reader is the trouble about reviving old services, there are bits you dont really want

(*) Either Dunstan or Cuthbert. They dug Cuthie up 200 y after his death, to save him from German air-raids? No to prevent the Vikings burning the body a thousand y previously.
Anywaaaaay but I am telling you the plart - (thx to Kenny Everett), they dug him up and found the corpse unblemished ( = sainthood) AND said " oh look a nice gospel book, we'll have that"
and then put the old boy back sub terram

oh and that is what I think they were carrying around yesterday

or st dunstan.....

The inauguration of the most powerful man on earth
no not Xi
POTUS that is.
consitutionally non-denominational
and jesus that doesnt mean they dont have God Bless America and all the other ya-ya

so shut it out ( religion that is!) and it get backs frooda window
( s/o else I am sure said that first)
\"when God plays dice, he knows whether it will be a 6 or not"\

PP, Stop telling us what god knows!!
