Suspected Drug Dealer Cannot Be Extradited To The Uk Because Of Poor Conditions In Uk Jails
Germany refused to extradite a suspected Albanian drug dealer to the UK because the UK would not give guarantees about the conditions he would be held (imprisoned), with his legal representative citing the poor conditions in UK jails (overcrowding, staff shortages, violence, poor ventilation etc).
Having left the EU due to Brexit, there is no longer the European Arrest Warrant system in place, which would have led to his automatic return (another Brexit benefit). With the UK’s poor prison conditions, we can expect to see more successful appeals based on this reason.
Apparently after the court ruling, the suspect was freed and can no longer be sought by the UK authorities while he is in Germany.
I have not seen the rabid Daily Mail/Express running this story, being outraged that foreign courts are demanding humane conditions in our jails.
