I think Treacle is referring to salesman's misogyny where they assume the female is totally ignorant mechanic-wise, and unfairly exploit the fact - so the chaperone is for technical expertise..

Always have bought car on my own - no problem.  Maybe salesman got the message "don't mess with me"!

Other story  .. did a "mystery shop"for a large garage trying to change my Fiesta .. salesman handed me keys to an almost new one and said "off you go, see what you think"  .. needless to say, he got nil points!!

Been buying cars since I was 18 and have never felt the need for a male "chaperone".  Do your homework and ask sensible questions, shop around and always sleep on it.
