Hi, I am researching an accident where the body has been found but not the head (in a lake).  Please does anyone know what measures may be taken practically to find it? The accident happened in 1967.

Donald Campbell?

I am sure CID will still have the "accident" on their files and be updating.  Can you tell us who it was?

Sorry, yes, it was Sir Donald Campbell who was killed while trying to break the water speed Record on Coniston lake in Cumbria in 1967.  My daughter is doing a project on the Lake District and found this disturbing fact.  Apparently they found the wreckage many years later and salvaged it, along with his body, but never found his head?  I have been to Coniston many times and swam/paddled in there, but definitely would think twice now I know it has a head/helmet in there- probably long gone, but must be so hard for the family to grieve properly knowing only part of him is buried?

I believe his helmet was discovered  -  the rest as you say.

Ah, thanks, I didn't realise that; I expect that makes finding any remains of the actual head much harder if there is no metal to detect.  Thankyou.

You could always go sculling on the lake [OK, I'll let myself out]

^Getting a head of yourself there, Canary :)

How macabre.
