Possible Hard Drive Issue

I have a terabyte hard drive with some Word files stored on it.

Two won't open, and my PC advises opening with a 'recovery' programme. 

Should I assume my hard drive is corrupted, and move everything off it, or could the fault simply be glitched files?

How important are the files to you? Do you have backups?

They won't drag, so it looks like they are caput.

I wonder if it's just two files, and if i can trust the hard drive, or whether to abandon it and get another one.

Very, and I have two backups.

Run CHKDSK to check the integrity of the disk drive:

Reformat the hard drive.

Restore the files from backup.

I am thinking that I don't trust this hard drive, so I'm going to retrieve backups and put them on a replacement. 

This is the third hard drive I've had from PC world that has frizzed on me, I shall buy elsewhere.

Right choice Andy if you have a backup use that, sounds like a dodgy drive.I assme it's HDD?

I doubt the retailer has much effect on the product. Maybe note the manufacturers of your failing drives and avoid.

 

There are disk check progrmmes out there you can leave running to check all. I've not used one for years, I was very impressed with Spinrite, but that one is probably old hat now.

CHKDSK, as recommended by Buenchico, can fix errors on the disc as well as just checking it. Hard drives have spare sectors on them which can be swapped in for faulty ones.
