I am neutral on the issue, as I know little about it but I don;t think you can lump "rural communities" together and claim that the issue has caused an irreparable divide between labour and anyone who lives in a forest. Many country dwellers opposed hunting with hounds also. My aunt was a farmer's wife in Devon, a Tory voter, and she hated it.
I think that an issue such as animal welfare is not quite the same as a backhander for services rendered: the idea of immorality only gains traction if you make the sort of claims about the after effects made in this link. Which I think are dubious at best.
