I am looking for some anti-virus software for my computer. Should I stick to Norton or McAfee? or can others be as good or better? e.g. Panda? I don't want it to make a big difference to the speed of the computer.

I use "Avast!" and I'm pleased with it. And it's free for home use.

If you don't want to see any performance degradation forget Norton. A good product it may be, but it slows down even the most powerful of machines.

McAfee - don't know much about it but a reputable product.

Why not try one of the free products out there ? I use them and have no problems with them. AVG from Grisoft or Avast. Both work well and are regularly updated.

Couple that with a decent firewall and some good free Spyware software - Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyware Blaster and that's all you need.

I've had problems with McAfee (to the extent that I uninstalled it) and know a few other people who have too.

The UberGeek who just fixed my PC (wasn't just McAfee - hardware problems too) said that when Vista (the new version of Windows) is released soon, you won't need any other security programmes.

AVG Free, together with Kerio Personal Firewall and Ad-aware personal for spyware protection. all free.
If you are currently running Norton and you switch to AVG, it WILL make a difference to the speed of the computer - it will get faster (and more reliable)

I have used Avast for nearly two years, it never slows the computer down, doesnt interfere with anything i do, and i dont have any problems with virus's and trojans.

I also use ZoneAlarm firewall and AdAware anti-spy.

I love it you've made my week!

Trusting Microsoft with your computer security would be insane - only last week there was a patch for IE to stop malicious websites taking control of your machine.

Hmm wonder why Vista's being delayed

I used to have Norton, but had a problem with my PC, when I phoned up my technical support - they said that they never recommended Norton as it was one of the worst anti-virus going. They recommended Kaspersky or Nod32. I now have the latter and am very pleased with it. You can buy it on-line

Thanks for your answers everyone - I will look into a few of the suggested ones!

Just to say that BillyNoMates might not have any mates but he's right about the spyware/adware removers... it's wise to have at least two if not more installed on your system and that they be ran regularly. One just doesn't pick up all the nasties.

I use Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot Search and Destroy, and (dare I say it) Microsoft's Windows Defender (used to be called Microsoft Antispyware), which are all free to download. I also use AVG antivirus and ZoneAlarm and my PC's never been happier ofr faster with any other security setup.

Oh and for goodness sake keep up to date with patches on your machine.
